Target Audience(s): Instruction librarians

Short Session Description (one line): Formative Assessment for Instruction Librarians: How Are They Doing? How Are We?

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
Formative assessments are in-the-process-of-learning assessments that allow teachers and students to adjust their instruction and learning strategies. It has been a hot topic in primary and secondary education for over fifteen years and is generally accepted as a key element of effective student learning in the classroom. It is therefore surprising that formative assessment is nearly non-existent in the library literature. Many instruction librarians are doing formative assessment through active learning activities in the library classroom without recognizing it by that term. However, a stronger understanding of the theory behind formative assessment, looking at activity ideas, and doing it more intentionally will allow us to better understand what our students are absorbing and how we can become better instructors.

Hi Mary,

I'm looking forward to your presentation! I am interested in learning more about assessment and how I can use it in my own work.

Thanks!

Sarah
