Short Session Description (one line): How can school librarians use digital storytelling to advocate for their professional work and the essential role of the school library program in the academic and cultural life of the school?
Full Session Description (as long as you would like): In this session, we will discuss the importance of harnessing the power of software and Web 2.0 tools to reach school library stakeholders to make a case for the central role of school librarians is creating vibrant literacy learning communities in their schools. Using digital stories to deliver advocacy messages is an effective and efficient way to reach out to classroom teachers, school administrators, K-12 students, and their families.
Our use of storytelling for advocacy is founded on the work of George Lakoff (Don’t Think of An Elephant: Know Your Issues and Frame the Debate) and Annette Simmons (Whoever Tells the Best Story Wins: How to Use Your Own Stories to Communicate with Power and Impact).
Using “story” as the basis for our advocacy work, we will discuss developing positive messages that speak to the needs of school library stakeholders and how the librarian and library program can meet those needs. Using words and images and narration, sound, or music, we will suggest ways to frame messages to make the maximum impact on viewers.
We will share and discuss effective storyboarding and production tools for creating digital stories. These resources are found at: http://ls5633.wikispaces.com/Digital_Storytelling
We will review a rubric for self-assessment and apply it to one of several examples using various tools that will be shared in the workshop. Examples are found on the LS5633: Art of Storytelling wiki at: http://ls5633.wikispaces.com/Digital_Advocacy_Stories
The session will conclude with ideas for disseminating digital advocacy stories, including linking to the school and library Web site, electronic newsletters and email distribution lists, digital photo frames, and more.
Participants will be invited to ask questions throughout the workshop and participate in the session follow-up by contributing their own digital advocacy stories to a collective repository: http://ls5633.wikispaces.com/Digital_Advocacy_Stories
