Hi all,

I would like to get some input from you all about texting for reference questions.  Have you used it?  If so, is it catching on?  Do you use a service, or a personal phone?  Let me know what this service is being used for, if at all, and if you think it's a waste of time or on the cutting edge of new services.

I just got back from the Special Libraries Association (SLA) international annual conference held in Philadelphia and one of the poster sessions of the Sci-Tech librarians was on "SMS Text Messging and Science Students: New Opportunities for Librarian Outreach" by Dr. Robert Tomaszewski, Science Librarian, Georgia State U., Atlanta, GA. He found that 23% of a setof organc chemistry lab students used SMS..."Librarians...are encouraged to add this technology to their communication toolbox..."  I suggest you contact Dr. Romaszewski for more information.

This is a great idea that I'd like to get to know more about. I guess whether it 'catches on' or not depends on many factors outside of our control - the take-up of smartphones by our patrons, our country's mobile network infrastructure, cost of implementing, and so on.
