non-profit publishing costs transparency demanded

The G. Maxwell case makes me think about transparency in publishing costs. I would expect greater transparency about operational costs in non-profit publishing than in a commercial publisher, and I'm not sure which side of the fence JSTOR actually is these days. …See More

shelves reader on mobile devices: RFID or augmented reality?

This application made me think as a user I would like to be able to point my mobile at library book shelves and, as I run it along the shelf, see on screen the catalog record of each book, without having to bend my neck to read the book spines and then having to pull and open each likely book to see the details inside. I don't know of any mobile phones that can read RFID tags, but perhaps an…See More

augmented reality software assistance for book reshelving by humans

An augmented reality application that detects books out of order and helps a human worker to decide which way to shift them towards their proper place would seem a good idea.   Quite interesting for an undergraduate's project as it has been produced:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgZVI630SsI&feature=channel_video_title Obviously a lot more development would have to go into the…See More

Exploiting the competitive edge in classroom teaching

This video interview [1] with Dr Bowen poses some interesting questions:If, as he recommends, lectures can be kept out of the classroom and instead be delivered as podcasts ahead of the lesson, and if the podcasts need not feature the classroom lecturers themselves but could be authored by the top experts from other institutions, what kind of business model is going to evolve from this…See More

Adaptive use of Library physical space for integrated researcher support

Researcher support in academic libraries is a current interest of mine. I would like to hear about different models used in Universities anywhere in the world.

In particular I am interested in how a physical space in a library can integrate into one single hub or point of access all the research support services, including a virtual research environment, that researchers may need. By researchers I mean the whole range from Masters by Research and PhD students to Post-Doctoral and… Continue

Yes, noise level zoning would have to be part of it, and I like the phrase "acoustic ecology" because it captures the idea of a dynamic , adaptive environment evolving with the acoustic needs of users.

For such a facility as I am envisaging one would have to consider the needs for silent individual study as well as the need for some collaborative meeting and social space: it's probably down to size and capacity of the premises. If, for instance, the space that can be devoted specifically to research support is not too big, and if there are already plenty of places for individual silent study elsewhere in the library, perhaps the dedicated research hub will have to be non-silent.

Alejandro,

Thanks for joining the Library Leadership discussion group.

Is there a particular aspect of the physical space that interests you the most? Are you considering the acoustic ecology of the space at all, or is that something outside your scope of interest?

By researchers I mean the whole range from Masters by Research and PhD students to Post-Doctoral and Research Fellows as well as the established academics.

This range of services is not limited to library services, or to the services provided by the institution for its researchers. I am sure there are already many universities where such ideas have developed and are successful.
