shelves reader on mobile devices: RFID or augmented reality?

Adaptive use of Library physical space for integrated researcher support

Researcher support in academic libraries is a current interest of mine. I would like to hear about different models used in Universities anywhere in the world.



In particular I am interested in how a physical space in a library can integrate into one single hub or point of access all the research support services, including a virtual research environment, that researchers may need. Yes, noise level zoning would have to be part of it, and I like the phrase "acoustic ecology" because it captures the idea of a dynamic , adaptive environment evolving with the acoustic needs of users.

For such a facility as I am envisaging one would have to consider the needs for silent individual study as well as the need for some collaborative meeting and social space: it's probably down to size and capacity of the premises. If, for instance, the space that can be devoted specifically to research support is not too big, and if there are already plenty of places for individual silent study elsewhere in the library, perhaps the dedicated research hub will have to be non-silent.

This range of services is not limited to library services, or to the services provided by the institution for its researchers. I am sure there are already many universities where such ideas have developed and are successful.
