Selling the social web to art librarians - how do *you* do it?

To my mind it sells itself as a tool for library staff to get out there. Anyway in my continuous quest to keep on top of stuff I am looking for examples of current practice that people know work well in their libraries.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) I am delivering a session looking at the social web to a group of Art & Design librarians and would welcome any comments or suggestions that I may be able to add to my… Continue

Online databases

My middle school currently subscribes to SIRS Discoverer as an online research data base. As a new librarian, I am becoming familiar with all that it offers but wonder if there are other sources being used that would be recommended as well. The other choices must be kid and teacher friendly and offer safe websites and different reading levels. Let me know what works and what your experiences have been.

Web Flash Tutorials

I saw a post on spresent at Infodoodads a while back and thought it looked like a very nice, easy way to make more interactive web tutorials. So, when my boss saw that Chicago had been added to Google's Street View option and suggested I write something up for our Featured Resource Blog, I decided to start experimenting.

{edit: hmm... the…

An Open Letter to the World, From Your Local Librarian

posted by Jeanne Munn Bracken

Dear library user,

Your local librarians are delighted to welcome you to the library. We are happy to help you find whatever you need (except for you porn surfers--you know who you are). There are, alas, some limitations to what we can do for you. Most of those limitations involve computers. As for the rest, well, we're talking humans here...

First, I have to point out that those of us in middle age were trained in the Dark Ages when…

good news for physically challenged users

A university in Japan has come up with a way for the disabled to use Second Life:

I love the implications this has for using 2.0 to improve services for the physically challenged.

Boston Globe: Next stage of Internet spawns variety of new jobs

A piece from yesterday's Boston Globe,

Next stage of Internet spawns variety of new jobs

Only a few years ago, a job in new media simply meant Web design. No more. The advent of Web 2.0, the next stage in the Internet's

evolution, has spawned a wide variety of previously nonexistent digital

media jobs.

An interesting note,… Continue

Creating a custom LibX plugin for Firefox

LibX is a Firefox extension designed to provide direct access to your libray's catalog. It does a number of nifty things:

* Gives you a toolbar from which you can search for specific fields in your catalog.

* Adds options when you highlight something and right click that search into your catalog or Google Scholar.

* Automatically highlights ISBN numbers and adds links to your catalog on webpages anywhere on the web.

ILA presentation on Managing Library 2.0

Our presentation at the Illinois Library Association conference in Springfield on Wednesday went really well. I was happy to talk with library managers, new and experienced, from around the state. We're all doing such interesting things to make 2.0 happen at our institutions. I'd like to share our powerpoint presentations with the group here. I welcome comments and feedback.

Starting LibraryStream

I'm launching a new blog this week and I hope you'll visit. It's called LibraryStream.

My plan is to use this blog to follow the course of social software in general and its value to libraries specifically. I’m the system trainer at a large public library system in the Pacific Northwest, a social web participant, and an avid reader. I hope I can marshall all those hats into an interesting blog.…

Bratislava's eagle

Bratislava is a capital of Slovakia. In the city are many historical monuments. I was at Bratislava in 16th of December 2005. I tell you a tail about Bratislava’s eagle.

The capitol of Slovakia had in 13th century big problem, Tatars. People at Bratislava were unhappy. Tatars destroyed country and their army were near Bratislava. Tatars had brutal and sadistic…

Still in a whirlwind

One gets sidetracked!

I have implemented EZProxy and ditched the RPA.

I am adding new dbs so I can't say this is really done.

I have struggled and struggled to finally get my HIP admin client fixed.

Stupid Java 1.6!

I finally found out there's an ipac mailing list, thanks to Dave's comment!

I joined CODI.

I made completely new websites using CSS for our dbs.The site design was a little old (10 years!)

Now to get Google Analytics… Continue

Radiohead to Let Fans Decide What to Pay for Its New Album

NY Times article: Radiohead to Let Fans Decide What to Pay for Its New Album

Definitely a Web 2.0 (miscellaneous) move by the band. Opening this up will generate more publicity, more "buzz," more interest, more communication between fans, more energy, and maybe...more money? It will be an interesting test to gauge how ready we are for this sort of jump. I like it.
