Short Session Description (one line): 5 ways to get the most out of online discussion boards

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

A discussion on the unsuccessful and successful uses of discussion boards based on the experiences of two online/distance library students. The discussion will focus briefly on common pitfalls of online discussion boards including information overload, and a negative perception of discussion boards. The majority of the discussion will focus on implementing learning objectives and developing a community of inquiry using the five following discussion board strategies.

  1. Using the board to present research findings
  2. Breaking the class into small discussion groups
  3. Making the best use of subject lines
  4. Writing prompts for critical thinking
  5. Student facilitation of discussion

The discussion will end with a review of these strategies and an explanation of the importance of communication in distance learning.
