Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
The Internet has had a major impact on society. To a large degree, it has broken down barriers between the famous and the common people.. This has resulted in a perception of empowerment of the masses.
This societal upheaval has had a profound impact on cataloging.
Cataloging policy development was formerly an activity controlled by elite groups. Catalogers expected decisions to be made by these groups and handed down.
Individuals who are accustomed to the participatory environment of Twitter and Facebook increasingly want to have a more personal connection to professional standards and activities. Access and participation are expectations in the social network of the Web. This presentation will examine the "democratization" of cataloging, and how the Joint Steering Committee, OCLC, and other organizations have responded to the Social Network.
