Instructing the Masses with an Army of One: Extending Information Literacy Online with a Limited Budget and Staff

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
Integrating information literacy in online courses is a constant challenge for academic librarians. From 2002 to 2011, the percentage of students at U.S. post-secondary institutions increased from 9.6% to 32% (Allen and Seaman, 2013, p. 17). In many cases, the growth in online programs has not been commensurate with library support to online students. This presentation discusses how one librarian launched an online embedded librarian program that is scalable, sustainable, and cost-effective. Using Google Forms and screencasting software, this librarian was able to create customized video tutorials and assessments in targeted courses. As a result, the library is able to offer a comprehensive information literacy instruction plan that can be scaled to adapt to growth in online degree offerings. Participants will learn how to strategically select online classes for an embedded library presence, how to use Google Forms and YouTube to create video tutorials, and how to keep their online embedded program sustainable as student enrollment increases.
