Short Session Description (one line): How to use libraries as spaces for social change and community engagement in impoverished communities
Full Session Description (as long as you would like): My presentation will describe the "lessons" I have learned while workiing in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines to create libraries in local schools in impoverished areas. I have discovered several key ingredients are necessary when building libraries, and creating a structure for ongoing teacher training, collection development and building a reading culture in our communities: nurturing channels for open and honest conversations, building trust, having a sense of playfulness, keeping a growth mindset, and respecting the traditions and cultural norms of the community - these are a few of the soft skills I have found critical for success in these projects.
My hope with this presentation is to encourage librarians to see themselves as agents of social change, if that is something that moves them, and give them strategies and ideas for more community engagement.
