Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

NTU Libraries has adopted a “whole of organization” approach to the use of new/social media for various purposes, in various ways.  Such an approach requires all library staff to be familiar and comfortable with using social media and new technologies for their daily work.  Along with a commitment to continuing professional development, this new commitment to incorporating new media tools into our work has resulted in an innovative professional development programme we call “The Next 23 Things”.  Based on the original “23 Things” program, we have incorporated regular learning of new media tools to enhance and enrich a monthly professional development session.  The “tool” itself is not the main professional development (PD) topic however - topics are focused on broader trends in libraries, higher education, publishing etc.  The new tool is introduced in order for librarians to complete a task that will enrich their understanding of the broad topic.  Of course, librarians also learn the new tool and are able to put that tool to immediate practical use.  We believe this approach reinforces learning and makes learning “sticky” in two ways – the new tool helps to engage librarians with the PD topic, and the PD topic gives meaning and purpose to learning a new tool.
