the future of libraries in the digital age
Your Name and Title: Sarah I. Smith, Reference/Instruction Librarian
Library, School, or Organization Name: Radford University
Area of the World from Which You Will Present: Virginia
Language in Which You Will Present: English
Target Audience(s): Academic librarians, school librarians
Short Session Description (one line): “Personal librarian” programs build library awareness and connections with students.
Full Session Description (as long as you would like): Transactions at our reference desk were annually decreasing at an alarming rate! As the department brainstormed ideas for how to make our services better known and more effectively used, I came across a marketing idea as used by Yale University: a “Personal Librarian” program. After successfully proposing the idea to my colleagues, we piloted our “Personal Librarian” program this fall with four of our core curriculum (general education foundation) courses.
This session will discuss our planning and implementation process with an emphasis on our goals and expected outcomes for this program, hopefully to incorporate discussion about how it can work at yours. I will also share how we have used – and plan to use - 2.0 tools in our implementation strategy.
