The technological advancement of the electronic age has permeated all aspects of our everyday
lives and most businesses in the industrialized countries have embraced some
kind of technology in their daily operations. Libraries have certainly not been
left out, as most of the libraries in these countries utilize different types of
technological tools in meeting the needs of library users. The technological innovations
of today have indeed revolutionized library services, as libraries have
undergone major transformations moving them from the Stone Age to the
Electronic Age. The growth of technology has forced library professionals to
rethink the way information is collected, stored and dispensed to library
users.

The self-checkout machine is a technological tool designed to
enable users in checking out library materials independent of library staff. It

self- checkout technology to minimize staff handling library materials, thereby allowing
greater attention to be paid to library users and other important functions that are performed behind the scenes.
