Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

In this presentation I will explore how tribal libraries can support rights of tribal nations to govern tribal data. I will introduce tribal data governance as the rights of tribal nations to control data, information and knowledge about a community produced by external actors. I will illustrate the usefulness of libraries in advancing a community right to data governance by discussing capacities of a library to support data gathering, organization and retrieval.

Next, I will examine tribal populations of California to emphasize a large number of tribal communities located in this state: 109 federally recognized nations; and 65 seeking recognition. I will review the current state of scholarship on CA tribal libraries to demonstrate a vital need to invest in this area of study and practice. I will conclude by suggesting  ways to collaborate with tribal nations toward revitalizing capacities of tribal libraries to manage tribal data.
