This talk will present a survey of how Twitch and Discord are used in Adult Services and ways these platforms can promote digital literacy, enhance community engagement, programming, and services.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

The intersection of streaming platforms and participatory online media along with the idea of users as content creators are all factors that have driven the development of live streaming gaming from a niche subculture to the mainstream. Twitch and Discord are part of a larger trend towards greater popularity and influence of eSports and gaming among adults. Skills and competencies used in live streaming encompass aspects of digital and information literacies. Twitch and Discord can also be used as tools for developing communication with targeted segments within the larger communities that public libraries serve to enhance community engagement, programming, and services. Twitch and Discord can also be used to support libraries’ vocational and academic educational outcomes.  This session will present a survey of how both platforms are used currently in Adult Services and emerging best practices in public libraries.
