Here’s a link to an excellent article on leadership by Daniel Goleman. Goleman’s the guy who wrote the books Emotional Intelligence and Social Intelligence. The fact that he puts so much emphasis on the emotional element in the leadership paradigm is quite refreshing. In this article he addresses what he calls the five components of Emotional Intelligence: Self-awareness, Self-regulation, Motivation, Empathy, and Social Skill.

I found the part that focused on the differences between the limbic system and the neocortex (and how those differences should shape our training and our actions) to be particularly enlightening. The research indicates that a head AND heart approach to leadership seems to work much better than a head OR heart approach.

One of my focuses on leadership is the metamorphosis from 20th to 21st century paradigms. in Eric C. Shoaf's "On leading and being led : Neither is a passive role". http://crln.acrl.org/content/72/2/102.full C&RL News(February 2011): 101-103 the author draws heavily on the work of John Lubans.  Lubans' book "Leading from the middle (Santa Barbara, CA: Libraries Unlimited, 2010) inspired me to become more involved in the professional organizations in which I was already a member.  In today's world, leadership is less hierarchically dependent, with power and authority shared among project participants, tenured and contractual workers, and individuals from various generations. Other gurus and sources of inspiration in the library world are Stephen Abram [http://www.slideshare.net/stephenabram1], Meredith Farkas [http://meredith.wolfwater.com/wordpress/] and David Lankes [http://quartz.syr.edu/blog/]. A favorite general muse for me would be Peter Drucker [http://www.forbes.com/2004/11/19/cz_rk_1119drucker.html]
