Second Life continued

I was given a tour of InfoIsland by Jambina Oh. The Library there does have books that you can take off the shelf and read (i.e. electronic books, although not the British Library equivalent with page turning). Librarians are mainly giving tours of the virtual space, giving practical advice on how to get an electronic newspaper or find a meeting point. Lots of food for thought on what we can do.

Second Life, Facebook and libraries

I have been spending more time in Second Life investigating the possible uses. I am particularly interested in the role librarians are taking in the virtual world. Some places like the University of Hertfordshire have spent a lot of time creating a virtual library which looks like a real library but then I was disappointed not to be able to take an ebook off the shelf and turn the pages.

Questions:

How do students view librarians in their social space? a help or an…

First Thoughts

Hi I too am only just starting to get to grips with the technology and the potential use within libraries. I am interested in the idea of a virtual social space linked with the physical library. We have just opened an Information Commons library here at the University of Sheffield and the students are using the space so differently to our other libraries. I am interested in how we can take the library to them and communicate with them about their information needs. I also think that we use… Continue

Hi Lyn,
I'm a teacher librarian & recently started a community based blog for getting boys to read - http://GettingBoysToRead.com. Please send me a friend request if you'd like to network, share ideas, and learn more about getting boys to read.

Sincerely,
Mike McQueen

Hello, Lyn! I'm also glad to see you're getting on well in Second Life. Actually, the person who gave you your last tour, Jambina Oh, is actually Amy Buckland, the new editor of the Library Student Journal (http://www.librarystudentjournal.org)

Also, if you're ever looking around for other new-types in Second Life, I'm usually hanging around the sandboxes. Just send a message to Arete Raymaker.

Hi Lyn

We've both been very busy recently, but I'd be interested to hear how you are getting on in Second Life. My attempts to join failed as I can't seem to get it to work at work, and it wouldn't install properly on my home PC either! We'll catch up next week I know if not before, but just to say hi! Did you see Sheffield's Information Commons made it into Private Eye last week?

well, it's been an uphill battle honestly. i implemented a new blog, eSource, to keep people informed about the library and also other resources. i've set up instant messaging accounts for IM reference and also Myspace and Facebook accounts for outreach, but i'm waiting for approval to start promoting all of that. i'm also really pushing for a site redesign that better supports web 2.0 apps and concepts. how about you?
