I'm a teacher librarian & recently started a community based blog for getting boys to read - http://GettingBoysToRead.com. Please send me a friend request if you'd like to network, share ideas, and learn more about getting boys to read.
Because of the recent tax reform here in Florida, we’re hunkering down for some serious budget cuts. We lost 4% of our budget last year and will lose 15% of our budget this upcoming year. There’s no way to put a positive spin on that. We’re going to be reducing our hours and currently have a hiring freeze in effect. But, so far, we haven’t been forced to consider closing any branches. Not all of the libraries in Florida have been as lucky as we’ve been. This is definitely a difficult time for our profession, especially here in Florida.
On the bright side, our director has taken a firm stance on preserving jobs. That’s very comforting and tends to be very good for staff morale. :) The next couple of years are certainly going to be a challenge for us. We have no choice but to accept that challenge and prove that we’re up to it. The way I see it, our job is to do the best we possibly can regardless of the circumstances. No excuses.
Glad to hear you're feeling better. And I’m thrilled to hear you’re almost normal again. You know that’s how I always think of you. Normal. :P
Nancy and Alicia, I'm so happy that things are going so well for you both. I know that you enjoy working together. And a new (or newly remodeled) branch must be nice. Alicia, remember that little book you gave me? I was reading it just the other day with my grandbaby, who is now almost 3 and the light of my life. I see her almost every weekend, and these days she comes to Nashville and spends the weekend with me. We have a blast! It's so good to be in touch with you both. Alicia, are you (let me guess) a children's librarian? :-) Nancy, when is your second grandbaby due?
