Across the nation, library workers serve a myriad of patrons experiencing challenging circumstances including those from vulnerable populations and those experiencing homelessness. Serving these populations could take a toll on the individuals. Library workers manage different situations that may arise while providing services to those populations. At the same time, they need to deal with people that may not want to share space with homeless individuals. Overall, it can be a very complex situation for librarians seeking to serve everyone in the community. Therefore, it is crucial that library workers recharge their batteries and equip themselves with wellness strategies that allow them to continue working and providing services.Loida Garcia-Febo, SJSU iSchool Health and Wellness Ambassador, will share strategies for self-care for library workers, basic principles of emotional intelligence useful for dealing with challenging situations, and best-practices for library teams to support each other.
