Short Session Description (one line): Using old digital devices to engage children when the pandemic disrupted learning.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a snowball effect on our lives; for example, schools and libraries in Kibera and across the country were closed. Children from impoverished areas were disadvantaged because they could not afford to learn online.
We had a brilliant idea: why not ask the general public to donate old or unused digital devices that they have lying around, onto which we will load Open Educational Resources such as curriculum materials, storybooks, games, and videos.
Then, for up to a month, we would lend the devices loaded with the said content to children in the informal settlement for free. The only requirement was that they return the loaned device every week for inspection and, if necessary, load more content.
Aside from the happiness these devices bring to the recipients, it has resulted in the instillation of a reading culture, and as they say, a learned community is an empowered community; this is our motivation. We are more than happy to train them to think, be creative and be critical.
The initiative has been replicated in three other community libraries.
