Short Session Description: Research based strategies and technology to enrich storytime events and help young patrons become fluent readers

Full Session Description:

For young patrons as well as their guardians, library storytime is an educational, fun and memorable activity. Not only is library storytime a great free form of entertainment for parents looking for activities for their children, but it also provides a bonanza of cognitive benefits. It showcases the depth and breadth of the library’s commitment to its community concerning early literacy and child development.

Some of the important pre-literacy skills that can be developed in children through storytime include vocabulary, narrative skills, phonological awareness, expression, and much more!

This session will offer a quick review of research based strategies that support oral reading fluency. Powerful techniques such as repeated reading and teacher modeling could be easily incorporated into a library storytime activity. Technology based database solutions are available to help make the storytime interactive and educational. This session will also discuss common disfluencies related to oral reading and how they can be measured with metrics such as speed, accuracy, and expression.

Few Takeaways from the session include;

  • Implementation of research-based methodologies during the storytime events to improve children's reading fluency and comprehension.
  • Ways to make reading fun and interactive for young patrons
  • Familiarity with innovations in reading improvement technologies that will help librarians take advantage of currently available solutions in libraries
  • Identification of critical oral fluency metrics that impact childrens' overall reading skills
