Language in Which You Will Present:  English

Target Audience(s): Academic librarians, as well as members of the profession interested in strategies for dispelling mis- and disinformation, and/or helping their patrons develop ideas on how they can do this themselves.

Short Session Description (one line):  This presentation examines the process of designing a module to help students recognize, understand, and avoid misinformation and disinformation relating to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Full Session Description:  In conjunction with the Public Health and Communication departments, the WSU University Libraries is producing a learning module designed to aid students in recognizing and dispelling mis- and disinformation related to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Focusing on key considerations in assessing how truthful or misleading an assertion is, this module will illustrate such questions as “What is a fact?  What is an opinion?  What makes them different from each other?” using Covid-related examples. The presenter will provide an overview of existing resources for combating the Covid infodemic which he is using to develop the module.  The presenter will then discuss the design process he is using to craft the module’s elements, produce it in a format that can easily integrate into the university’s learning management system, and receive buy-in from teaching faculty to include it in their courses (including a brewing conversation about making the module available university-wide). Additionally, the presenter will address the challenges of designing a direct assessment tool for an asynchronous module that is not linked to specific classes or class assignments. Audience members will learn about the creative process that has gone into this teaching module with a specific eye towards how they can themselves adapt this tool or create their own for a similar purpose at their home institutions.
