Full Session Description:
The University Library at California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM) served as a meeting space for students and the campus community, but this changed with the COVID-19 pandemic. Seeing the need to transform and transition in-person library events in a virtual landscape to continue connecting and supporting students, I envisioned virtual spaces where first-year and transfer students could feel welcomed and engage with library staff while our physical doors remained closed during the pandemic. These spaces came to be the Virtual Open House and the Digital Welcome Guide. The Virtual Open House event offered a place where students could engage with various library departments, learning about the Library’s resources and services. This event also offered an opportunity for interdepartmental collaboration within the Library. The Digital Welcome Guide aimed to provide students with a personalized care package curated by library staff to support their self-care practices and to de-stress during their academic journeys. The session will discuss how the CSUSM Library’s Virtual Open House was planned and implemented, and how to create a Digital Welcome Guide for your library institution.
