Practical Approaches for Librarians Navigating Anxiety and Uncertainty in Times of Change
A Library 2.0 Masterclass with Loida Garcia-Febo

OVERVIEW

Over the past several years, librarians have worked through an extended period of uncertainty shaped by global crises, social change, evolving community needs, and rapid shifts in how libraries operate and serve the public. Library workers are often called upon to provide stability, access, and support while simultaneously managing their own concerns about the unknown, increased emotional labor, and constant adaptation.

Balancing professional responsibilities with ongoing uncertainty can contribute to heightened anxiety, emotional fatigue, and a sense of overwhelm. In public-facing roles especially, librarians may absorb the stress of the communities they serve while navigating changing expectations, emerging technologies, and complex workplace demands.

This masterclass offers practical, accessible approaches designed to help librarians manage anxiety, remain grounded during periods of change, and sustain their well-being in high-pressure environments. Participants will explore strategies for regulating emotional responses, strengthening focus and purpose, and cultivating adaptability in the face of uncertainty. The session emphasizes tools that are realistic for daily library work and supportive of long-term resilience.

Drawing from time-tested approaches used across cultures and disciplines, the training highlights simple yet effective methods for maintaining balance, fostering supportive connections, and sustaining a hopeful, forward-looking mindset. Participants will leave with strategies they can revisit during challenging moments to support both personal well-being and their ongoing service to their communities.

Participants will also create a personalized Wellness Empowerment Toolkit, including sections on emotional regulation, purpose and focus, building support networks, hope and future-oriented thinking, and thoughtfully selected AI and online wellness resources. This toolkit is designed to serve as a practical reference for navigating anxiety and uncertainty in evolving library environments.

This 60-minute training is presented by Library 2.0 and hosted by Loida Garcia-Febo. The recording and a handout copy of the presentation slides will be available to all who register.
