Short Session Description: Volunteer work can help you use those professional skills that may be neglected in your everyday job, while helping you stay relevant as a librarian.

Full Session Description:  Often the everyday work of being a librarian distances us from the professional skills we have learned and would like to cultivate.  Volunteering outside our normal library community helps keep an array of professional skills up to date, builds learning communities through personal networks, supports our extended communities, and enriches our intellectual capacity and perspectives as information professionals.  Exploring librarianship in diverse ways can also create professional avenues that open doors of opportunity both within and outside the organizations where we work.  Attendees for the session will hear of ways to volunteer using skills in reviewing, writing, interpreting data, and using culturally responsive approaches to information sharing with professional and government organizations, as well as international non-profits.
