Short Session Description (one line):

A survey of faculty from a range of departments at a bachelors/masters granting public urban institution reveals many levels of comfort among classroom faculty with the possibility of a librarian introducing artificial intelligence into a library research discussion.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

Survey responses from 199 faculty representing the five schools of Brooklyn College reveal a range of comfort levels with having a librarian introduce artificial intelligence (AI) into a discussion about library research with students.  The willingness of the faculty to introduce the topic themselves in their classrooms was indicative of how comfortable they are with having a librarian bring up the topic of AI when teaching a library research session. The researcher elicited whether and how the faculty might have introduced the topic of AI to students, assignments faculty may have given to students using AI, and what their concerns were about having a librarian introduce the topic of AI in a library instruction session. Of particular interest were the many comments faculty offered regarding their own comfort with AI in higher education. Answers to open-ended questions fell into several categories that ranged from "Not On My Watch/Not For My Subject," Ambivalence, "We Are Talking About It (Or Should Be ….)," "I Am Not There … Yet It’s Out There," "We Have to Acknowledge It For the Sake of Our Students," to "Training is Needed (And The Librarians Should Lead the Way!)." Librarians should respond enthusiastically to the confidence faculty in the classroom have in these information professionals taking on campus leadership roles in integrating AI into higher education.
