Full Session Description

A new generation of tools has emerged, fueled by advances in machine learning, large language models, and artificial intelligence in general. These new tools offer distinct advantages over traditional library platforms and apps regarding processing speed, the scope of supported information retrieval and communication, objectivity, scalability, and engagement. Some librarians and library vendors try to catch up with AI technology; some treat these tools as magic boxes without questioning or evaluating them. At the same time, AI tool development far outpaces empirical research and librarians’ evaluations, rendering it challenging to understand the landscape of tools, let alone assess their methodological rigor, limitations, and value-added impact. This leaves librarians without the information to make smart decisions about adopting and leveraging tools to retrieve and synthesize knowledge. The presenter will share her work with AI developers as a tester and her current research and projects on mapping these tools along the research and literature review process. The objective of the presentation is to make the case that librarians specializing in systematic searches, literature reviews, and supporting emergent researchers need to play a more central role in testing and vetting AI tools to reap the developmental benefits of new tools.
