Tiffany Coulson, Mattawa Branch Librarian

NCW Libraries and Mattawa Elementary School

Area of the World from Which You Will Present: Mattawa, Washington, USA

Language in Which You Will Present: English

Target Audience(s): School or Public Librarians serving bilingual children and families

Short Session Description (one line): Language as inclusion: Creating multi-lingual browsing spaces in libraries.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like): In the United States about 23% of children speak a language other than English at home.  While the inclusion of multiple languages in a library is a step towards serving families that speak a heritage language, creating multi-lingual browsing spaces within libraries affirms multiple language use, encourages intergenerational browsing, builds literacy, and physically includes students who speak multiple languages.  This session will address best practices for building a culture of language inclusion in public and school libraries.
